Bashlow Confederate Half Dollar Restrike in Silver, NGC MS-66

949.00

1962 Robert Bashlow restrike of the Confederate Half Dollar.  More accurately, a restrike of the Scott CSA Half Restrike of the late 1800's, as Bashlow owned the Scott die and used it for the "CSA" side of this piece (I believe possibly a transfer die - my memory is a bit hazy on this point).  "Reverse" die by August G. Frank Co. of Philadelphia - oddly enough, the same City where the dozen original Confederate Cents were struck. Struck on ready-made Silver planchets rather than over a Seated Liberty Half Dollar.  5,000 said to have been struck in Silver, an unknown number actually distributed.  Less than 60 certified at NGC (when last checked), it appears none at PCGS.  A very low certification rate suggests many were lost to the melting pot in 1979-80, when they would simply have been a Silver"widget" worth much more as bullion than a collectible.
