1876 Shield Nickel, Very Fine, Surprisingly Scarce

Oddly enough, although most of the other U. S. coins struck in 1876 are relatively available, the Shield Nickel of that year is not particularly common. This is probably due to the relative lack of interest in the denomination at the time - basically, until the Buffalo Nickel came along, collectors and people in general pretty much dismissed the 5 Cent coinage as "utilitarian". This is a solid VF example, with some heavy die cracks on the Obverse, a problem which plagued this series.
