Similar to the coin in MS-64 also being offered (as of August 2019), an excellent example of some of the problems faced by the U. S. Mint under the Harding & Coolidge administrations of the 1920’s. Both demanded economies from all Government agencies, forcing the Mint to stretch die life to maintain production, resulting in poor strikes and other quality issues. This occurred more at the two Branch Mints, but Philadelphia was affected as well. This is an original Gem BU coin with bright flashy surfaces, with marks appropriate for the grade. The Obverse die was a bit worn and shows softer overall detail, while the Reverse seems typical although it shows a touch of weak strike on the Bison’s leg. It is possible that the Mint adjusted die spacing to help with die life, a common cause of weak strikes. The Reverse of the coin is also rotated about 10 degrees East.
