The popular error/variety considered by some as the 'ultimate' Buffalo Nickel. One of the most important such coins in American Numismatics as the discovery of this variety launched a legion of searchers, who spent the late 1930's through the 1950's scouring their pocket change for similar errors & varieties. A truly original coin, presently in a PCGS AU-58 holder. Freshly graded, as tight as they are right now (October, 2018), this stands a chance at an upgrade into an Unc holder, as the typical mushy look of the Reverse caused by the abraded die sometimes is given a Mulligan. This certainly gives the appearance equivalent to an MS-62/63 coin, without the price tag - that minor amount of "wear" saves you $1000 or more. About as fully struck as a Three Legger gets, with less die erosion than commonly seen visible on the Obverse, with bright luster and original color. A coin that I avoid buying unless it is a NICE AU or better, and this is nice - the CAC sticker only confirms the obvious. For reference, a large population at PCGS/NGC in AU-58, over 2,300 coins. This points out that this variety is not really rare in the absolute sense, but tends to be a condition and QUALITY scarcity. The CAC "pass rate" is something less than 10%, an indication of some of the looseness which the services allow themselves on this date.
