1899-S Barber Quarter, Choice Fine, Repunched Date

1899-S Barber Quarter, Choice Fine, Repunched Date

105.00

A surprisingly scarce date, R-4 in this grade, one of the three so-called "Philippines" dates, along with 1898-S and 1900-S. The vast majority of these dates (Dimes, Quarters & Halves) went straight from San Francisco to the Islands to replace Spanish Colonial coinage after their "liberation" as a result of the Spanish American War. Lawrence notes however that even given the relatively low mintage, this does not seem to explain why this date is so tough. This coin is very close to Very Fine, with some remaining luster among the stars. Presumably lightly cleaned a long time ago, the color is decent now. It is also an example of one of the few Repunched dates in the series, Lawrence #101, with slight repunching showing on the second 9.
