1872 Liberty Seated Half Dollar, Choice Very Fine

A much tougher date than commonly given credit for. Less than 900,000 struck, and by one estimate only about 600 left in existence. For reference, the 1855-S Half, most definitely considered a Key Date, has an estimated survival of 500 pieces. The 1888, one of the late 1880's low mintage issues is estimated to have more than 10% of the original mintage of 12,000 surviving, and costs several hundred Dollars in this grade. Yet the 1872 is lumped in with the "commons". In my opinion a great number were exported or melted for their slightly above face value Silver content, or scraped out and re-coined at the new, post-1873 standard by the Mint. Either way, a decent coin despite a very old, light cleaning, many years ago. This has retoned back and shows some nice edge toning.
