An original Uncirculated example of the first Morgan Dollar design struck. It was quickly noticed that all of the other Eagle's previously used on U. S. coinage only had seven tailfeathers - why this would have been that much of a concern is unknown (bad luck perhaps??). Either way, less than 700,000 of this design were struck, and due to the changeover to 7 TF, these were not released for circulation to any great extent. The result was many years of storage in bags, and being moved about, so the typical survivor is MS-63 or below. This coin shows the typical, light bagginess encountered, but is a solid BU coin - likely it would certify MS-61 or 62. They do tend to give this date a bit of a "mulligan". This is an example of VAM 17, with doubled Obverse and Reverse. LIBERTY is the most obvious doubling on the Obverse, however the Reverse is sharply doubled over many of the features. Scarce but not "rare" as defined in the VAM world - but no less interesting.
