A very attractive original BU coin, certified by ANACS as MS-63, treated more than a bit harshly. Most coins at this grade show obvious hairlines, spots or stains, or signs of having been dipped out to remove darker toning. Definitely NOT the case with this coin, which is the equivalent of what will normally certify as MS-64 at PCGS or NGC - I have certainly seen WORSE looking coins in the holders of both services at this grade and above. Unfortunately, CAC will not sticker ANACS coins and more’s the pity, as in my opinion this would be a lock. A good reason to not ignore coins in holders other than the Big Two. ANACS is certainly a bit underrated as they are typically conservative, mainly out of concern for being perceived as a “Brand X” service, however the investment market does not recognize them as worthy of consideration (see my comments regarding CAC). This is an institutional bias that affects the Three Piece Suit boys who cater to the wealthy investor as opposed to the collector, as it is easier to sell a label than a coin when someone has to think about the matter and make up their own mind. For instance, there is currently a PCGS MS-64 coin being offered by a large dealer that clearly shows what is in my opinion light wear or contact down Liberty’s leg, at over $1,000, and which has surfaces that are far less “flashy”. As there is not a huge difference in values between the two grades, I have chosen to leave it in the present holder for now.
