1935-S Peace Dollar, Four Rays, Choice Uncirculated, PCGS MS-63

An original Uncirculated example of the Four Rays variety. For some unknown reason, the Mint produced a brand new Reverse master for this last year of the series, showing four sun rays below the “ONE”. This also led to one of the few Doubled Dies known in this series, as this variety is also found with some doubling on the olive branch clutched in the Eagle’s claw (VAM 4, which this is not an example of). Both hubs are about of equal scarcity, although I tend to see the 4 rays a bit less, perhaps just due to the random nature of coin distribution. That would make sense as I assume that the 4 Rays hub was used later in the year to strike coins, and those would have been less likely to be distributed on the West Coast, as late deliveries typically just went into Treasury Dept. storage vaults. This coin itself shows bright obvious luster under the light overall toning - as this kind of color is somewhat distracting to some, I have moderated the price somewhat.
