1896 Indian Cent, Choice Toned Proof, Old Capital Holder

1896 Indian Cent, Choice Toned Proof, Old Capital Holder

$265.00

An original "old time" Proof example, from the pre-third party certification days. Choice Proof, equivalent to a certified PR-63 or 64, depending upon how they flip the coin. No problems such as spots or heavy marks, the deep color the result of how it was stored at some point. Dark brick Red overall, with blue highlights, a bit more so on the Reverse. The pair of "squiggles" seen on the Reverse are lint marks from small threads struck into the coin from rags used to wipe the dies between impressions. These are natural and common on 19th Century Proofs. While they slightly limit the assigned grade in most cases, as they are on the Reverse they would likely have no affect on the grade of this particular coin, as they would not certify this above PR-64 based upon the color (my opinion). Housed in a Capital Plastics rigid holder, I have left it so for someone who is interested in a bit of numismatic history. The enlarged images of the coin may look a bit strange as a result, as I had to figure out a way to avoid flare off the surface. Hopefully, while it should not need be said, I will guarantee that this coin if submitted comes back as a Proof; specific grade "number" not guaranteed, as even THEY can't be predicted with any certainty, however it will be PR-62 or higher.
