$193.00

HK-302, SH 13-1, Official Medal struck to commemorate the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, aka the St. Louis Worlds Fair.  I will try to add better images shortly.  This piece new to market having been held by a now retired dealer in his private "hoard" of well over 30 years until recently.  NGC has changed graders, yet again, for tokens and SCD's, and as typical grades (and attributions) have gotten stupid.  Easily a Gem BU based upon typical raw grading.  The only thing that you can say negative about this is a small area of roughness on Jefferson's jaw which is a very minor planchet issue, a combination of some a planchet flaw and some light roughness.  Very interesting color, a mellow yellow with light blue-gray toning around the rims.  NGC attributed as "yellow bronze" however recent research by Johnathan Brecher and Jeff Shevlin has shown that pinning down the actual composition of any of the HK-301 to 304 as listed in H-K is questionable.  Planchets for these were manufactured daily, with unsold stock being melted, mixed with new material and new strip drawn and punched.  More accurately closer to "brass" chemically, and could be considered either SH 13-1 BS or CU.  Either way an interesting piece.
