Official Medal 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition, NGC MS-65, Original Envelope

A mostly bright Gem BU example of the popular Official Medal from this Expo, designed by Robert Aitken. Certified NGC MS-65, attributed as “HK-401”. In my opinion this is not correct, as HK-401 refers to “gilt”, all of which were actually Gold-plated. I believe this to be Shevlin’s SH 18-1 BB, Bright Bronze, equivalent to HK-400. Regardless of the attribution, a nice piece that shows some light toning streaks, the result of many years spent stored in the original envelope it came in as sold at the Mint exhibit in San Francisco. The envelope (shown) is included with this item, and is actually far more scarce than the SCD itself! Jeff Shevlin’s text on West Coast Expositions values the Bright Bronze version at $425 in MS-65, the Gold-plated/Gilt at $525 - you may make up your own mind about this piece. Some premium is attached to the envelope, based upon my own experience.
