HK338, Pike's Peak Centennial, With Original Envelope

$100.00

(SOLD March, 2019; not positive of the price) HK-338, Official Souvenir Medal of the 1906 Pike's Peak "Southwest Expedition" Centennial.  Choice Uncirculated or better, with the original envelope these were sold with at "reissue" in 1956.  As related in the H-K reference, late delivery of the medals in 1906 meant several thousand went unsold at the celebration in Colorado Springs.  They were found in 1955 stored in the basement of a bank building undergoing demolition, saved and sold to support the 1956 celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Zeb Pike's discovery. Approx. 4,000 were sold in 1955/56, presumably most in Bronze, so they tend to be available in nice Unc condition. However, the original envelopes they were sold in are VERY Scarce to Rare. This is the first I can remember seeing as such in quite a while. H-K notes that most sold in 1955/56 had been originally looped in 1906, and had the loops removed prior to sale.  I have included an image of the edge of this medal showing what may be where a loop was removed - if so it was a beyond expert job as I see no disturbance of the metal surface and the rest of the edge appears fully original and bright.
