1916 Buffalo Nickel, FS-402 2 Feathers, CACG MS-61, Partial Designers Initial
FS-402, 2 Feathers. Uncirculated, certified CACG MS-61, an original BU example of this variety. Typical tough CACG grading, this is only one of 2 in CACG holders, and the only Unc (two stickered at CAC in MS-64). The actual color of this coin is not as "orange" as CAC's imaging makes it look (I may add some of my own images a bit later). This is also a partial effaced designer's initial, with the "F" being at most a soft blur. A similar example virtually identical to this coin was sold at Heritage in October, 2019 in a PCGS MS-62 holder, S/N 35040792 (this can be seen on CoinFacts). That coin was struck from the same Obverse die/die state as the present example. The "regular" No Initial is a separate FS number, FS-401, and comes from a different Obverse die entirely. Most FS-401 have weak third feather detail, but I was not able to find any images of an example that was a true 2 Feather. The 2019 Heritage piece was obviously recognized as "something different" as it brought a significant premium, selling at $864, 2-1/2 times the current PCGS Guide value for an MS-61. FYI, the coin offered in this listing is currently (8/22/25) shown as one of the images on the Greysheet site under the listing for the FS-402 variety. Given the unusual nature of the piece as a quasi FS-401/402, I am asking a premium. As opinions differ on such things, those disagreeing with me are free to suggest an alternative price. Just be polite and reasonable if you choose to make an offer.
