1935 Buffalo Nickel, Doubled Die Reverse, PCGS/CAC XF-45, Scarce Variety

1935 Buffalo Nickel, Doubled Die Reverse, PCGS/CAC XF-45, Scarce Variety

$1,250.00

FS-801, not attributed on the PCGS label, however I guarantee the attribution. A scarce later date variety, with less than 1,000 certified at PCGS, NGC plus CACG, despite being rather obvious. Scarcer than the more famous 1937-D 3 Leg Buffalo, which has over 1,100 coins at PCGS in AU-58 alone. Of the ~875 total of this variety at PCGS & NGC (including Details coins), only 38 XF-45’s, with 75 in all AU grades. Scarce with CAC approval, with 5 XF-45’s currently shown with a sticker (Dec. 2025). These are shown for what they call the “base” variety, as no attributed FS-801 are shown stickered, and only 3 CACG certified (only one CACG AU-53 currently better than this example). Most likely, the relative lack of collectors of circulated Buffalo Nickels until the 1940’s, let alone variety collectors until the discovery of the 1937-D 3 Leg, meant most coins escaped notice until they had worn to the VF stage in the heated pre-wartime economy of 1938-1940. A nice original example, and probably undervalued given the lack of CAC coins, stickered or slabbed. PLEASE NOTE: The CAC value shown on their website at $700 for this variety is for the less desirable FS-803 die. As stated I will guarantee the attribution should someone wish to re-submit it for a new holder. As CACG does not show one of these in XF-45, that would be my choice for re-submission (kill two birds with one stone). I will note that a well known national dealer is currently offering a PCGS XF-45 that is pedigreed to a major collection for $550 (the PCGS Guide price). HOWEVER - that coin has a spot of significant edge damage that should have caused it to “no grade”. This is a good example of rarity or pedigree trumping normal quality standards, in my opinion - I can guarantee that had I sent that coin in, it would have body-bagged. One last point: checking this cert # on the PCGS website will turn up a problem, for whatever reason - regardless it is legitimate as I know the dealer who submitted this coin and obviously CAC did not have a problem with it. It may be yet another glitch in the website itself, which has been having issues ever since they optimized it for smartphone use rather than PC’s.
