FS-401, Die Pair #2, aka the “Strong Reverse”. An original example of this famous variety, attractive for a coin that usually looks kind of crappy considering the die issues that created these. Currently housed in an old ANACS “soapbox” holder and clearly undergraded by the current standard. I compared these to PCGS examples at VF-20 to 35 and it certainly appears to be on the higher end of the numerical range. There is always a bit of “voodoo” in terms of numerically grading these, as the mushiness of the Obverse due to die deterioration makes it difficult. They are commonly graded based upon how strong the Reverse is. In this case, the Reverse of this coin is particularly sharp and still shows some signs of luster. Problem free, the scuffs showing are on the outside of the old holder. I am positive it would certify higher, however wished to keep it in the old holder, for those who appreciate such things. It is priced based upon my cost, at about the VF-30 level; I will likely re-certify it later if not sold. I will point out that similar specimens in VF-25 holders are currently being offered at about the $1,300+ level, and that is NOT CAC’d.
