1838 Capped Bust Half Dollar, Reeded Edge, Uncirculated Details, Great Type Coin
(Cross-listed from ebay) Details of Uncirculated, a light very old cleaning and I believe retoned. You have to look very hard to find anything wrong with the Obverse, although the Reverse displays some very light visible hairlines. The color is very even and is either an excellent "old school" retoning job, or it might even be natural retoning over a near Century. This came out of a very old Northwest collection, so who knows. Either way I would say a nearly 100% sure Details grade if sent for certification, so I did not bother to submit it. Very well struck and even overall for one of these, other than some weakness in some of the stars, and no die cracks readily visible. The Reverse shows two small areas with strike issues, at the "S" of STATES and the "DO" of DOL. These areas also show light parallel lines which in the old days would be called "adjustment marks". However at this point the Mint was not doing that by hand so almost certainly remnants of roller marks from planchet strike preparation. This is not post-strike damage or from the cleaning. Considering that many if not most examples at this grade level have been seriously damaged (or are otherwise already in a certified holder if they would pass), a reasonable example for a high grade Type example, with good to excellent eye appeal despite the minor issues. Normally a $1200 to $1500 coin raw, more like $1500 to $2000 certified; priced based upon my cost. If the buyer chooses to submit for certification, guaranteed genuine and guaranteed to certify as AU Details or above (you can contact me for my extended return privilege for certification).
