1915-S Panama-Pacific Exposition Commemorative Half Dollar CACG AU-58
An attractive example of this early Commem, with the typical surfaces of a coin purchased as a souvenir of the event. Lightly handled with a touch of wear on the highest points, with 99% of the original luster remaining. Attractive color, a base color of “old Silver” with a touch of yellow mixed in, a darker ring of toning at the edge being a mix of red, blue and brown. This “ring” is a common feature of this issue, as I see it on most genuine examples. It seems to be an artifact of strike, being a combination of the design and metal flow when made, plus long term storage, and is not strictly speaking “album toning”. As such, it is a useful marker of authenticity, as any example not showing this “ring” is either likely cleaned, or possibly non-genuine. Like many of the early Commems, this issue tended to tone darkly and receive abuse from the largely non-collectors who originally purchased the coins, so many I see have been cleaned badly. This is a pleasant exception. All images courtesy of CACG.
