1889 Three Cent Nickel, Gem Proof PCGS/CAC PR-66, Last 3 Cent Nickel?
JD-2, Reverse die state (c). An unusual set of dies as the Obverse shows misplaced digits below the date, suggesting perhaps that a die meant for Business strikes was pressed into service to make Proofs. The Reverse die shows an obvious small rim cud at 12:30 in this very late die state; as noted in JD's book, this die failed shortly after this cud appeared. The specimen in the National Numismatic Collection is from this die pair and is known to have been acquired in October of 1889. The Reverse on the NNC coin shows the area as a die crack not yet a cud. As such it has been speculated that this die pair may be responsible for the last 3 Cent Nickel Proofs struck, and perhaps even the last 3 Cent Nickels struck in the series. Either way, a nice original example with attractive flashy surfaces, showing some light Obverse Cameo contrast. This date is known for lacking in that regard, having a very small number of Cameo designation.
