HK-735, U. S. Express Co. 50th Anniversary, Choice Uncirculated

HK-735, U. S. Express Co. 50th Anniversary, Choice Uncirculated

$211.00

Struck as a souvenir to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the U. S. Express Company. The concept is similar to that for HK-296, the Wells Fargo Semicentennial piece struck in 1902, and undoubtedly was suggested by that issue, given that the U. S. Express Co. was a major competitor of Wells.  Designed by and struck at the U. S. Mint, increasing its importance.  Choice Uncirculated, certified by ICG as MS-63, and underrated in this condition. While reasonably "common" (or should I say "available") in terms of So Called Dollars, most examples encountered seem to be dark, rough or show corrosion, probably due to loss to the ground or mishandling by whomever received the medal. The present example is a pleasant exception and shows interesting color as well, with some light purple-red undertones on the Obverse, more so on the Reverse. This side also has a sense of being semi-prooflike, visible when tipped to the light.  The color was difficult to capture - the image provided was the best I could do under the circumstances.  Despite the potential opinion of many regarding the certification involved, correctly graded in my opinion, otherwise I would not have purchased it. I have certified SCD's at NGC and PCGS for many years, and know the difference.  Just not worth regrading the piece for me; I leave the decision of a cross-over to the new owner.
