U. S. Grant 1864 Campaign Medal, Dewitt USG-1864-1, NGC AU-58

$527.00

Token struck for the 1864 Presidential Campaign, featuring U. S. General Ulysses S. Grant.   DeWitt D-USG-1864-1, Silvered Brass.  There were some who supported Grant, then a Lieutenant General, as a candidate to oppose Abraham Lincoln, and attempted to "draft" him into a campaign (similar to that of Admiral Dewey after the 1898 Spanish-American "skirmish").  Grant however was otherwise occupied, was not "political" as was Gen. George McClellan at the time, and this was the sole political medallion struck for the aborted campaign.  Choice Almost Uncirculated, certified NGC AU-58, the sole NGC certified example.  This piece does not show in the NGC population as it was certified prior to NGC establishing a complete Census; the cert # will not show up in a search, however I guarantee authenticity.  ex-PCAC October, 2010 sale; ex-Richard Crosby collection; last sold by Steve Hayden December 2022.  There is one PCGS certified Silvered Brass AU-58 example, which in my opinion (having certified tokens and medals for 20 years) is clearly overgraded, certainly no where as attractive as this example.  Also another PCGS MS-63 in Brass, that is currently available on ebay at $550.  A well worn example in VG/Fine which cannot be distinguished as to whether it was originally plated sold for a rather astonishing $260 on ebay Oct. 2025.  Please note that due to value this will require Insured shipping with Signature Confirmation, hence the S&H shown.
