1916 Doubled Die Buffalo Nickel, FS-101, King of the Buffalo Errors, PCGS VG-10

$9,495.00

Doubled Die Obverse, FS-101, "King" of the Buffalo Nickel error/varieties and one of the most obvious DDO's in U. S. Numismatics, along with the 1955 Doubled Die Lincoln Cent.  Visible to the naked eye even in low grades, and startlingly scarce considering that it should have been obvious to most anyone that they were looking at something odd.  Roughly 200 examples known in all grades per PCGS.  Comments regarding this are provided below should someone wish to read them.  Choice Very Good, certified PCGS VG-10.  This specific example sold at Heritage September, 2012, and can be identified by the small stain on the Reverse.  Most images shown are courtesy of Heritage; the lead image is "proof of life" that I actually own this coin.  In an older PCGS holder, some mild scuffs on the holder however no damage. The coin is evenly worn with "perfect" Old Nickel color.  The scratch seen on the Obverse is not as noticeable when the coin is viewed in person, being well toned over.  It is visible in the image largely due to the effects of using harsh light to take the image.  This is out of an old collection where it was likely held since purchase following the Heritage sale, and as such has probably not been to CAC. Due to value, this will require Registered Mail shipping, which is slower delivery time. If purchased expect TWO WEEKS estimated for delivery.

For the curious:

One story that I have heard is that a large number of those survivors known originally turned up in Australia. Whether this is true, and whether it had something to do with the First World War is not clear.  American troops were not present "Down Under" during this period, although U. S. troops fought under Aussie command in 1918 in Europe - perhaps there is a connection, perhaps not.  It is possible that the U. S. Navy used Australian ports to refuel during the War, with the resulting transfer of coins from those personnel into local commerce.
