1862 Seated Liberty Half Dollar Pattern, J-295, God Our Trust Reverse

1862 Seated Liberty Half Dollar Pattern, J-295, God Our Trust Reverse

$2,495.00

Part of a pattern series struck 1861 to 1863 to test the addition of “God Our Trust”, later changed to the more familiar “In God We Trust”, to U. S. coinage. Obviously a reaction to the instigation of the Civil War, the first coins were struck December 1861 (Judd 277 to 280) and proved immediately popular. As a result, larger numbers were struck in 1862/63 to satisfy numismatic demand. An important coin as it proceeds the addition of that Motto on the new 2 Cent Piece of 1864 (Patterns of those struck in 1863). Struck in standard coin Silver, certified PCGS AU-58, the only coin in that grade at time of listing (April 2026). Mintage unknown, however currently 27 at PCGS, NGC uncertain as their Census was confused, however approx. 6 to 8 I could trace. That makes this “common” by the standard applied to Pattern, listed as R-5. The deep blue gray surfaces commonly seen on Silver Patterns from long storage in older non-archival storage methods, some hairlines as befits the assigned grade however an attractive coin overall. Due to value this will require Registered Mail shipping, which is slower delivery time - however as I am paying for the service, one should not complain too much for “bulletproof” delivery.
