1900-S Barber Half Dollar, PCGS/CAC VF-30, Tough with CAC
The last of the so-called “Philippines” dates, given that moniker as a large quantity of the total Mintage of 1898 to 1900 Silver coinage from San Francisco was sent to the Archipelago to replace Spanish Colonial material. The 1900-dated coinage is the easiest of the three to find however still carries a bit of a premium compared to what the total number struck might suggest. VERY tough with CAC approval overall, as a high percentage of mid-grade coins (Fine to EF) were cleaned as they came back from the Islands. As an example, 202 coins at PCGS from F-12 to EF-40, with 52 at NGC – versus only 15 at CAC (including one CACG). Oddly enough, mid-grade coins are scarcer overall and with CAC than EF-45 to AU-58 coins! In the case of this specific grade, 25 at PCGS 8 at NGC with only two at CAC. For what is generally seen as a middling common date for an S Mint, that is a vanishingly small number. Nice even reddish-gray color, the light streak through Liberty’s head is likely an old rubber band mark, although this date is also known for some planchet issues – not really a problem from the standpoint of eye appeal in my opinion.
